Bosnia And Herzegovina

WELCOME TO THE BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA

Get to know Bosnia and Herzegovina’s tight-knit Jewish community in Sarajevo! The country’s Jewish presence dates back to at least the 15th century with the arrival of Jews fleeing the Spanish Inquisition. While the Jewish immigrants were treated as second-class citizens under the country’s Ottoman rulers, they were allowed to live in peace with their Muslim neighbors, a relationship which remains stable to this day. Tragically, Bosnia’s Jewish population was not spared the horrors of the Holocaust, with almost three-quarters of Bosnian Jewry (approximately 10,000 people) wiped out by the Nazis. Today, the Jewish population of Bosnia and Herzegovina stands somewhere between 500-1000 people.

Your tour may take you to Sarajevo’s main Ashkenazi synagogue, known for its painted interior and sweeping arches. Next you’ll visit the museum downstairs as well the art gallery housed in the New Synagogue building next door. Your guide will connect Sarajevo’s past to its present, taking you from the historic neighborhoods of the Jewish community to experience a taste of the community living there today. Jewish Bosnia and Herzegovina has recently experienced a resurgence, making it an inspiring destination to explore!
