With a thriving Jewish population of 391,665, Canada is home to the sixth-largest Jewish community worldwide. Jewish life in Canada can be traced back to the mid-17th Century, when Jews arrived in Montreal with British soldiers during the French and Indian War. The country’s Jewish population also swelled considerably in the wake of the Holocaust, when many European Jewish refugees arrived in Canada, along with Jewish refugees from North Africa.
Toronto’s Jewish community is large and growing with 188,715 Jews living there in 2014. The size of the community supports a wide range of Jewish institutions, including synagogues of every denomination, various Jewish schools, and community organizations.
Canada has many synagogues to choose from. The list is too exhaustive to place on this webpage but here is a link to a list that includes many synagogues of diverse denominations. For more information on synagogues in Canada please consult one of our expert guides.
