The popular story for how the first Jews set foot in Cuba goes back to Columbus in 1492. Legend has it that he was accompanied by three Jewish Marranos from Spain. Though some Jews made their home on the island over the following centuries, Jews did not settle in Cuba in large numbers until the 20th century when Jews from Europe immigrated and established synagogues and community organizations. Most of Cuba’s Jews fled after the 1959 revolution, with some moving to Israel and others to the United States. The current Jewish community consists of just 1200 people and is reliant on the largesse of foreign congregations in the U.S., Mexico and Canada.
