Though the first synagogue in Panama was founded in 1876, Jews have lived in the country since the time of Spanish Colonial rule when most lived as conversos, having converted during the Spanish Inquisition. Several hundred Jews moved to the country while the Panama canal was being built but the community remained small. The Jewish population increased with the immigration of Ashkenazi Jews from Europe in the years preceding WWII.

Today, approximately 7000 Jews live in Panama, supporting several synagogues and Jewish schools. Much of the community is traditionally observant and there are many kosher restaurants in Panama City.
