The first Jews to settle in Singapore came from Iraq and soon established businesses in the colony as well as a synagogue. By the time WWII began, there were over 1500 Jews living in Singapore and when Japan invaded the island in 1942, much of the Jewish community was interned. After the war, many Jews immigrated to the United States and Australia and the community shrunk.
Today, about 2000 Jews live in Singapore.
